Celebrating February 9
Daily Five Food Finds: Bagels
1. The word Bagel is often thought to have derived from the ‘buckle‘ shape it has, but actually it is from a Yiddish word ‘beygl‘ meaning ring or hole.
2. Bagels are one of the few breads that are boiled then baked. creating the sought inside while retaining a crisp exterior.
3. Over a Billion dollars a year are spent on bagels in the US alone.
4. The top selling bagels are Plain(#1), Whole Wheat(#2) and Sesame Seed(#3)
5. Originally bagels were baked and sold by street vendors. They would have been carried around on a long string draped over the sellers’ shoulders. (Link to drawing)
What’s a lox? Lox is thinly sliced smoked salmon
Bagel & Lox are typically bagels with cream cheese, onions, and smoked salmon. Other variations often include tomatoes, cucumbers, capers, and/or scrambled eggs

What a cruel twist of fate that I begin following your blog on the eve of a meat celebration! Thankfully I looked ahead and I know what is in store tomorrow. If someone doesn’t present me with a brownie for breakfast tomorrow, I shall be heartbroken.
Looking forward to following along with the culinary celebration.

Today is National Bagel and Lox Day! The Jewish girl that I am (from the New York area, nonetheless), I am loving this food holiday! I think I know what I will have to stop for on the way home today. Happy National Bagel and Lox Day! And thank you to Foodimentary for bringing this holiday to my attention.

Ohhh the bagel… I miss you. You’ve really got to hunt one down here in Sao Paulo, and it is just not the same as those in NYC.

Bagel and Lox Day?! Who knew there was such a thing! I love your little historical food fun-facts. Since I missed World Nutella Day, maybe I can start to make up for it by having a bagel with lox today. The capers in the picture for this post have sealed my fate – I love those briney little guys!

This is probably my #1 go to meal 🙂 Thank you so much for this post, the picture is amazing and I think I will be having this for dinner tonight! The way I like it is in this order: bagel half toasted, cream cheese, thick sliced tomato sprinkled with crunchy sea salt, lox, thinly sliced red onion, capers and if I’m in the mood a poached egg 🙂 Oh my….!

Mmmmh. That looks so yummy! Personally, I care for the lox more than the bagel. 🙂 Followed your link to the interesting drawing. Where is it from? Russia maybe? Any idea where bagels were “invented”?

Bagels are one of my favourite things to eat, but sadly are not all that common in Australia.
There is only a small handfull of places in Melbourne that sell them, largely thanks to the Jewish community.
Sadly too many bakeries here bake bread rolls with a whole in the middle and market them as bagels.
You have now inspired me to visit one of those lovely bakeries that make the real ones 🙂
