Five Food Finds about Taco Bell
- Founder, Glenn Bell, first opened the chain “Del Tacos,” a hot dog and taco franchise.
- He was the first to fry his taco shells in advance. Before then, they were fried on demand.
- They were the first fast food chain to have move tie-in promotions.
- In 1962, a tacos only cost 19 cents.
- Even though the 1990 Chihuahua was an advertising phenomenon, taco sales actually went down during that period.

Taco Bell also was a leader in pre-prepared, pre-cooked ingredients delivered to each Taco Bell store. The stores became assembly centers in the 1980s. Even ground beef was pre-cooked.

I grew up in/around L.A. I always thought Taco Tio’s tacos were BETTER than Taco Bell’s. I went to school in San Bernardino too, and remember seeing the stand that was Bell’s.
You might want to do a post about San Berdoo. I mean how many cities are home to Taco Bell, MacDonalds, the Hell’s Angels and Twyla Tharp? I mean really! Also, the city has a rich food history– they sponsor an Orange Festival every year, or did!

yeah Taco Beel is one of those food chains that seems to be getting better and better. They are coming kurt with locally sourced food items, fresher ingredients,s and a much healthier menu. It’s like subway. A lot is processed but I feel like I know exactly what calories I’m taking in and can trust the food. Chain food chains are here to stay but there is much room for improvement all around.

They should bring back that commercial “Where’s the beef”. I haven’t been back to Taco Bell since my first time. When all I got was lettuce cheese and few crumbles of meat. Has it changed since?
I know the revamped my local Taco Bell. I hope the food improved with the looks.
Sorry for the negative.
Thanks for the history.

i love the old logos and photos..I used to love their combo plates when I was a kid and I was a freak for their 39 cent tacos and 49 cent burritos when that went live in the 80s
