Here are today’s five food facts to know about Empanadas:

  • The Spanish word for bread is “pan”.  “Empanar” is a verb form that means “to bread”.  Emapanada is the past-participle, “breaded”.

  • It’s basically a single-serving turnover.  It can be filled with sweet foods like fruits, sugars, and syrups, or savory foods like meats, cheeses, and oils.

Happy National Chocolate Parfait Day!

Here are today’s five things to know about Chocolate: 

 

  • Dark chocolate has more antioxidants than green tea and just as many as blueberries.
  • White chocolate really isn’t chocolate. It’s made from cocoa butter, the substance you get by pressing cocoa beans. Cocoa butter is absent of the cocoa solids used to make chocolate.

  • Chocolate was consumed by the ancient Aztecs as a frothy beverage, somewhat like hot chocolate we drink today.
  • Chocolate comes from a plant, called Theobroma cacao, which translates “Food of the Gods”.
  • Eating chocolate can also reduce the symptoms of stress.

  • 1841 The first wagon train left Independence, Missouri for California.
  • 1851 London’s Great Exhibition opened in Hyde Park. It was the first international exhibition ever to be held. The Exhibition was housed in the Crystal Palace.
  • 1889 Bayer introduced aspirin powder in Germany.
  • 1927 Imperial Airways became the first British airline to serve hot meals.
  • 1931 Empire State Building opens. It was built on the site of the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel
  • 1971 ‘Brown Sugar’ by the Rolling Stones is released.
  • 1991 Charles Elton died. Elton was an English biologist who first developed the idea of a ‘food chain.’

Here are today’s five thing to know about Food:

  1. Buffets are offered at various places including hotels and many social events.
  2.  Sideboards are also known as buffets as they may be used to offer the dishes of a buffet meal to guests.
  3. A buffet can also be referred to as a cafeteria, snack bar, counter and smorgasbord.
  4. The word buffet comes from Fr bufet “bench, stool, sideboard”, from the 12th century. The definition of buffet was extended to mean a “meal served from a buffet” in 1888.
  5. One form of buffet is to have a table filled with plates containing fixed portions of food; customers select plates containing whichever food items they want as they walk along.

1826 Joseph-Louis Proust Died. Proust was a French chemist. In 1799 he was the first to extract sugar from grapes, and proved it identical to sugar extracted from honey.

1841 Thomas Cook hired a special excursion train between Leicester and Loughborough in England for a temperance meeting. The beginning of Thomas Cook & Son, the worldwide travel agency.

1942 Oskar Bolza died. German mathematician noted for his work on the reduction of hyperelliptic to elliptic integrals.

It might as well be National Foodimentary Day

Here are today’s five thing to know about Food:

  1. Buffets are offered at various places including hotels and many social events.
  2.  Sideboards are also known as buffets as they may be used to offer the dishes of a buffet meal to guests.
  3. A buffet can also be referred to as a cafeteria, snack bar, counter and smorgasbord.
  4. The word buffet comes from Fr bufet “bench, stool, sideboard”, from the 12th century. The definition of buffet was extended to mean a “meal served from a buffet” in 1888.
  5. One form of buffet is to have a table filled with plates containing fixed portions of food; customers select plates containing whichever food items they want as they walk along.

  • 1754 William Bligh was born. He became captain of the English ship, ‘Bounty,’ and while sailing to Tahiti to bring back breadfruit trees, the most famous mutiny in history took place.
  • 1890 Harland Sanders was born near Henryville, Indiana. Founder of Kentucky Fried Chicken fast food restaurant chain.
  • 1901 Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec died. French artist who documented Parisian night life in the 1890s with his insightful posters.
  • 1995 Orville Redenbacher died. Founder of gourmet popcorn company.
  • 1999 ‘Catfish’ Hunter, baseball pitcher, died.

1794 Sylvester Graham was born in West Suffield, Connecticut. He advocated vegetarianism, temperance and the use of coarse ground whole wheat (graham) flour. He also invented the Graham cracker in 1829.

1826 Joseph-Louis Proust Died. Proust was a French chemist. In 1799 he was the first to extract sugar from grapes, and proved it identical to sugar extracted from honey.

1841 Thomas Cook hired a special excursion train between Leicester and Loughborough in England for a temperance meeting. The beginning of Thomas Cook & Son, the worldwide travel agency.

1942 Oskar Bolza died. German mathematician noted for his work on the reduction of hyperelliptic to elliptic integrals.

1958 ‘The Purple People Eater’ by Sheb Wooley is #1 on the charts.

1966 Large hailstones fell on Detroit Lakes, Minnesota. One hailstone measured 1 foot in diameter.

1996 The record catfish caught with rod and reel weighed 111 pounds and was caught in Tennesee.

1996 Dolly, a sheep, was born at the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, Scotland. Dolly was the first animal cloned from an adult animal.
