Many consider this National Pancake Day! So celebrate!

Many celebrate today with rolled thin pancakes topped with caster sugar(powdered) a dash of lemon juice and a dollop of jelly or jam 

Here are today’s five thing to know about Pancake:

  1. Throughout Europe most people celebrate Shrove Tuesday with pancakes
  2. Pancakes are associated with the day before lent because it was a way to use up “rich foods” such as eggs, milk, & sugar, before the 40 days fast begins
  3. The word ‘shrove’ refers to an old English word shrive meaning ‘confess’
  4. Most people call today Mardi Gras, which in French means Fat Tuesday. Marking seven weeks before Easter Day.
  5. In Iceland they celebrate today with salted meats, fish, and peas. Known as Sprengidagur (Bursting Day)

  • 1554 Hieronymus Bock died. A German botanist whose work contributed to the transition from medieval beliefs to modern science.
  • 1741 Jethro Tull died. He was an English agriculturalist and inventor whose ideas were instrumental in the development of modern English agriculture. One of his inventions was a horse drawn seed planting drill that sowed 3 even rows of seeds at once. (1701). The music group ‘Jethro Tull’ was named for him.
  • 1858 Edwin T. Holmes sells the first electric burglar alarm in the U.S., in Boston, Massachusetts. His workshop was later used by Alexander Graham Bell.
  • 1895 Carl Peter Henrik Dam was born. Dam was a Danish biochemist who discovered vitamin K in 1939.
  • 1927 Erma Bombeck was born. Writer, humorist, you will find some of her quotes about family and food on the Food Reference website.
  • 1931 Alka Seltzer was introduced.
  • 1985 Nathan Pritikin died. A nutritionist who believed that exercise and a low fat, high unrefined carbohydrate diet helped reverse his own heart disease. He founded the Pritikin Longevity Center in 1976.
  • 1989 The USDA approved ‘Simplesse,’ a low calorie fat substitute.
  • 1994 Whirlpool began manufacturing a refrigerator that was significantly more efficient, and did not use freon. Freon has been implicated in the destruction of ozone in the atmosphere.

  1. The first ready-mix food to be sold commercially was Aunt Jemima pancake flour introduced in 1889.
  2. Maine produces 99% of all the wild blueberries in the United States of which 90% are frozen.
  3. The world’s largest pancake breakfast was held in Springfield, America in 2012.
  4. It is widely believed that the tradition of pancake races began in 1445 in Olney in Buckinghamshire when a woman was making pancakes but lost track of time.
  5. The highest ever flip was performed by Dominic Cuzzacrea. The pancake reached a height of 9.47 metres at the Walden Galleria Mall in Cheektowaga, New York, USA, in November 2010.

  • The first written record of pigs in a blanket occurs in Betty Crocker’s Cooking for Kids in 1957.
  • Pigs in a blanket are also known as devils on horsebacks, kilted sausages, and wiener winks.
  • In the United Kingdom, pigs in blankets are small sausages, or chipolatas wrapped up in bacon.
  • In America, pigs in a blanket often refers to hot dogs, Vienna sausages, or breakfast sausages wrapped in biscuit dough, croissant dough or a pancake and then baked.
  • You can combine these dishes by wrapping your sausage in bacon, then cooking them into a biscuit or croissant.

  1. Throughout Europe most people celebrate Shrove Tuesday with pancakes–
  2. Pancakes are associated with the day before lent because it was a way to use up “rich foods” such as eggs, milk, & sugar, before the 40 days fast begins–
  3. A waffle is basically a pancake with a syrup trap.  -Mitch Hedberg
  4. Pancakes became popular because of the ease of quickly producing them in large quantities.  They’re ideal for a big celebration or a large family’s breakfast.–
  5. While cooking pancakes, the French often make a wish, while flipping the pancake to turn it over, while holding a coin in the other hand.

  • 1869 Mary Mallon was born. ‘Typhoid Mary’ was an infamous household cook who was responsible for major outbreaks of typhoid in the New York City area in 1904, 1907, and 1914. She was immune to typhoid herself, but was a carrier of the bacillus, and spread it wherever she worked as a household cook.
  • 1880 Sir John Boyd Orr was born. A Scottish scientist and nutrition expert, he won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work to eliminate world hunger.
  • 1923 Nancy Green died. Nancy Green was hired to represent and demonstrate Aunt Jemima Pancake Mix. At the 1893 Columbian Exposition in Chicago, the exhibit was so popular that police had to control the crowds at the Aunt Jemima booth. Fair officials awarded her a medal and proclaimed her Pancake Queen. She played the part of Aunt Jemima until her death in a car accident.
  • 1947 Jerry Corbetta of the music group ‘Sugarloaf’ was born.
  • 1964 Robert Irvine was born. British celebrity chef. Food Network shows include ‘Dinner: Impossible’; ‘Worst Cooks in America’; ‘Restaurant: Impossible’.

1554 Hieronymus Bock died. A German botanist whose work contributed to the transition from medieval beliefs to modern science.
1741 Jethro Tull died. He was an English agriculturalist and inventor whose ideas were instrumental in the development of modern English agriculture. One of his inventions was a horse drawn seed planting drill that sowed 3 even rows of seeds at once. (1701). The music group ‘Jethro Tull’ was named for him.
1858 Edwin T. Holmes sells the first electric burglar alarm in the U.S., in Boston, Massachusetts. His workshop was later used by Alexander Graham Bell.
1895 Carl Peter Henrik Dam was born. Dam was a Danish biochemist who discovered vitamin K in 1939.
1927 Erma Bombeck was born. Writer, humorist, you will find some of her quotes about family and food on the Food Reference website.
1931 Alka Seltzer was introduced.
1985 Nathan Pritikin died. A nutritionist who believed that exercise and a low fat, high unrefined carbohydrate diet helped reverse his own heart disease. He founded the Pritikin Longevity Center in 1976.
1989 The USDA approved ‘Simplesse,’ a low calorie fat substitute.
1994 Whirlpool began manufacturing a refrigerator that was significantly more efficient, and did not use freon. Freon has been implicated in the destruction of ozone in the atmosphere.

  • One pancake fan ran a marathon while continually tossing a pancake for three hours, two minutes and twenty seven seconds.
  • The first ready-mix food to be sold commercially was Aunt Jemima pancake flour. It was invented in 1889 in St. Joseph, Missouri, USA.
  • The first pancake recipe appeared in an English cookbook in the fifteenth century.
  • Celebrity chef Aldo Zilli set the world record for the highest pancake toss in 2005 with a toss of 329cm.

1904 Lafcadio Hearn died. (Patricio Lafcadio Tessima Hearn). A writer, translator and teacher, her wrote ‘La Cuisine Creole,’ the first Creole cookbook.

1914 The U.S. Federal Trade Commission was established.
