March 6 – National Oreo Day

In 1912, Nabisco had a new idea for a cookie – two chocolate disks with a creme filling in between. The first Oreo cookie looked very similar to the Oreo cookie of today, with only a slight difference in the design on the chocolate disks. Little did they know that the Oreo cookie would become the largest selling cookie of all time.

1899 Aspirin was patented by Felix Hoffman of the German company, Bayer. Aspirin was originally developed by Charles Frederic Gerhardt in 1853, but he never thought it important enough to patent.

1912 Nabisco debuts the Oreo cookie. The Oreo is considered largest selling cookie of all time.

1930 Retail frozen foods go on sale for the first time in Springfield, Massachusetts. Various fruits, vegetables, meat and fish were offered for sale. Clarence Birdseye had developed the method used to successfully freeze foods on a commercial scale.

Chocolate chips are small chunks of chocolate. They are often sold in a round, flat-bottomed teardrop shape. They are available in numerous sizes, from large to miniature, but are usually around 1 cm in diameter. Many sizes are available depending on preference.Chocolate chips are a required ingredient in chocolate chip cookies, which were invented in 1933 when Ruth Graves Wakefield of the Toll House Inn in the town of Whitman, Massachusetts added cut-up chunks of a semi-sweet Nestlé chocolate bar to a cookie recipe. The cookies were a huge success, and Wakefield reached an agreement with Nestlé to add her recipe to the chocolate bar’s packaging in exchange for a lifetime supply of chocolate. Chinese Almond Cookies

These light, tender cookies are great served with ice cream as an easy holiday dessert or with simply with a cup of coffee or tea after dinner.  These cookies were traditionally made with lard in China because pork is plentiful. changing the recipe to butter instead might give a richer flavor and slightly crisper texture. They are much more flavorful than the fortune cookie, keep them on hand, baked and ready, in your freezer.
